WILLY NILLY
is DEBORAH WILLARD DESIGN
with a new name on the storefront. Now that I have some items for sale besides my own, notably my mother's dollhouses, some handcrafted wooden toys, and some art prints and metalwork by a friend of mine, it was time to rename the shop.

In the near future, I plan to have children's books available for sale--both new and used. The new electronic devices are great in their own way, but in my opinion, they will never offer the same esthetic pleasure as holding a beautifully illustrated book in your hands and turning each page to reveal a new work of art or a colorful character each time.

I am an enthusiastic supporter of all these events. They bring lots of people into town to enjoy the works of visual and performing artists. If you haven't been to Downtown Winston-Salem lately, and particularly Trade Street,  you need to treat yourself to a trip to town. You'll be amazed at how different it is from how it used to be "back in the day...." You'll enjoy wonderful  dining in one of the excellent restaurants here, unique specialty shopping at numerous shops and galleries for unique gifts for everyone on your gift list--and especially for yourself!

I  take lots and lots of photos! Flowers, birds, Winston-Salem Downtown Arts District, Reynolda Gardens, my hand painted clothing,  my other art, my mother's dollhouses, Terri's etched copper jewelry and accessories, cats, dogs, St.John, autumn leaves, last winter's snow, shop and studio displays, and lots more!!

Taking pictures is a pleasant form of relaxation for me, almost bordering on meditation. Photography is a means of developing my own reference files for my other art. Plus I like the challenge of creating a good composition out of the elements and/or surroundings there in front of me. It is also handy when I need to create a visual record of designs I have painted so that I can show them on-line.

Happy Spring !!

A few months ago, I was appointed to serve on the  Downtown Arts District Board.  Then in February, they went and elected me Corresponding Secretary. My duties include facilitating communication  and compiling the monthly e-newsletter, which goes out free of charge to DADA members, as well as to anyone who wishes to stay informed as to what's going on in our lively Arts District.

The Downtown Arts District schedules Gallery Hops all year 'round, always on the 1st Friday of each month. Streets in the neighborhood are closed off, and outdoor performances and activities are scheduled during favorable weather conditions.  When the weather is lousy, sometimes the streets are left open to allow people to park as close as possible to the shops and galleries they want to visit. The Downtown Arts District Association (DADA) website has more information about the arts district and its member galleries, shops, businesses, and restaurants.
